• Design and implement a comprehensive and engaging chorus curriculum that engages and challenges students in the grades K–8 and aligns with School standards
• Teach vocal techniques, music theory, sight-reading, and performance skills
• Direct and conduct assemblies, concerts, and special performances
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to enhance the choral experience for students
• Develop lesson plans that incorporate a variety of teaching methods, hands-on activities, and assessment tools to engage diverse learning styles and abilities
• Encourage creativity and self-expression through projects and performances that blend various forms and emphasize personal voice and interpretation
• Maintain a classroom climate conducive to exploration and learning while establishing clear expectations and a safe space for risk-taking in chorus and performing arts
• Offer guidance and constructive feedback to help students refine their skills and develop their unique identities in vocal techniques, music theory, and performance skills
• Support students’ emotional and social growth by encouraging collaboration and respect in the creative process
• Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, and school events to support the school’s mission and educational goals
• Partner with families to share student progress, celebrate achievements and provide support as needed
• Stay current with trends in education and teaching techniques to enrich the classroom experience
• Participate in workshops, conferences, and professional development activities to expand skill sets and improve instructional strategies
• Coach two seasons of sports or an equivalent alternate assignment 
• Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or a related field
• At least three years of experience teaching K–8 students in a choral setting
• Demonstrated knowledge in teaching principles, theories, methods, behavior management techniques, classroom management skills, and conflict resolution strategies
• Strong piano proficiency and ability to accompany student performances
• Knowledge of diverse choral repertoire, including classical, contemporary, and multicultural
• Ability to engage and motivate students of varying skill levels
• Proficiency in developing, delivering, and assessing lesson plans and instruction
• Effective communication skills (oral and written) to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines with maximum precision and minimal supervision
• Understanding of the unique academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of this age group
• History of continued education or professional development
• Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities in a fast-paced work environment
• Willingness to work as a team player and as an individual contributor
• Commitment to actively promote and contribute to an engaging and inclusive workplace

 

This job requires one to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds as well as the ability to stand, sit, walk, and effective use extremities to reach, hold, touch, push, pull, lift, and carry. Incumbents must also effectively communicate (oral, written, non-verbal) with others. This job typically requires 35% sitting, 35% walking, and 30% standing and is performed under minimal temperature variations in a generally hazard-free environment. Depending on classroom assignment, this role may require one to relocate classrooms throughout the day and require ascending and descending stairs. Incumbents will occasionally be required to work extended hours, including after school, during evenings, and on weekends.

 

Dexter Southfield’s 36-acre campus is composed of several buildings, playing fields, and outdoor learning spaces, which are accessible via internal and external walkways, stairs, nature paths, hills, and uneven terrain. This position requires one to transfer between these areas in all weather conditions.
