Announcement

The Pagosa Springs Golf Club, a privately owned 27-hole, Johnny Bulla designed course that opened in 1973 and located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is pleased to announce a position for Superintendent. The golf course was constructed on a former cattle ranch and forested area and is nestled in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. The facility consists of:  three 9-hole courses allowing for three different 18-hole combinations of play; full range; large practice green; green nursery; fairway and tee box nursery, maintenance facility and clubhouse.  The turf grass varieties consist of: bent with mixed POA greens, bent and blue rye grass fairways, fine rye tees and primary roughs and sheep and native grass secondary roughs.  The course is irrigated with raw water from its high quality, freshly sourced mountain water lakes and ponds.   PSGC is a seasonal golf course with the primary golfing season occurring April 15 – Nov 15.

Pagosa Springs, CO Area Description 

Pagosa Springs, located in Southwest Colorado, has sweeping vistas of 13,000+ foot mountain peaks, valleys, lakes, rivers, and forests and is surrounded by and gateway to millions of acres of national forests and wilderness areas.  With a mild year-around mountain climate the area has become one of the last “found” Colorado destinations, growing while still maintaining a small-town feel.  It is known for its vast array of outdoor activities, including:  golf, alpine and cross-country skiing, snow mobile riding, fishing, rafting, boating, hunting, firearm & archery sports, hiking, biking, camping, soaking, horseback riding, flying (Stevens Field 8100 x 100-foot GA runway), atv/utv riding, soaring, ballooning, recreational vehicle camping, etc.  Tourism, second homeowners, ranches, retirees, private business investment and recreation have strong economic influences and drive the local economy.

Position Summary

The Mechanic reports to and works hand-in-hand with the Superintendent and is primarily responsible for the repair and maintenance of all equipment and machinery in the turf department and related areas (maintenance facility, etc.) as well as providing support to the property (club house ) in areas of related expertise (i.e., golf carts, electronics, etc.).  This includes meeting established safety standards and adherence to the respective equipment owner’s manual specifications to maintain the proper working order and longevity of all equipment and machinery.  The ideal candidate will be a team player with a great attitude and strong work ethic.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Must be knowledgeable and capable of operating all equipment and machinery utilized by the turf department including tools and machinery needed to make related repairs or routine maintenance.
• Must be proactive in implementing and logging preventative maintenance programs for all equipment in the turf department.
• Must be capable of diagnosing and making informed and correct repairs and/or maintenance of, but not limited to: 
• Repairs and Maintenance of equipment should be performed in an adherence program of symptom analysis, diagnosis, correct repair (not parts replacement) without damaging the equipment costing and thus costing more repairs and expense.
• Ensures safe work environment to include compliance with OSHA guidelines and proper operating usage of equipment as defined in related owner’s manual specifications.
• Assists in the training of team members for proper use of equipment & machinery.
• Implements methods and procedures designed to minimize operational costs and maximize resources to insure the proper working order and longevity of each piece of equipment.
• Timely completion of repairs and preventative maintenance to ensure golf course quality standards are achieved.
• Ensures daily a.m. set up of all turf equipment.
• Daily communication with the golf course superintendent regarding the status and condition of all turf equipment.
• Ability to make fabrications or alterations to new or existing equipment to insure proper working order and efficiency.
• Maintain adequate inventory levels of parts and supplies including fuel and oil levels.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• On course assistance to insure proper working order of all equipment.
• Daily implementation & adherence to PSGC universal standards.

• Ability to work as a team, take direction and learn.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, mornings, and evenings as business demands.
• Lift, reach, bend, twist, push, pull, squat, grasp and use arm-hand coordination as needed.
• Have the ability to lift 50+ pounds and acquire assistance when needed.
• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, noise levels & varied weather conditions.
• Exposed to normal golf course operations materials, supplies,  and equipment.

Qualifications Education And/or Experience

• Thorough understanding and ability to operate all pieces of turf equipment.
• Thorough understanding for mechanical operations of engines, electrical systems, and hydraulics.
• Basic understanding of irrigation systems and components related to best practices in consideration of agronomics.
• Ability to follow company policy/procedures, complying with all administrative responsibilities.
• Communicate effectively with Superintendent, Managers and Owners.
• Safely operate heavy and light equipment and follow oral or written instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, guests & vendors.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.  Technical training courses through an industry-recognized organization preferred.
• A basic understanding of the game of golf.
• Experience or understanding of providing a superior turfgrass playing surface a plus.
• Capable of reading as-built records, terminology and symbols.
• Capable of assisting in other aspects of maintenance beyond the irrigation system.
