The Campus Services Supervisor provides a safe, attractive, and compliant outdoor environment for the UTC campus and UTC students and staff. This requirement applies 24/7/365 throughout the year. It includes all weather conditions, campus events, and any campus emergency.
The position requires work in multiple roles such as a supervisor of the outdoor environment, an on-the-spot problem solver, supervisor of Motor Pool operations, and performs activities associated with grounds throughout the UTC campus and in certain off-campus properties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervises and manages campus grounds maintenance, including up to 17 employees
- Responsible for developing project and routine maintenance schedules for ground maintenance, which include routine and special maintenance, and special landscaping projects
- Identifies tasks, conducts time studies, and determines the frequency of maintenance
- Manages workforce, including the procurement of contract and temporary labor when necessary to ensure completion of tasks that include planning and scheduling work to ensure that all assignments are properly manned
- Trains and instructs new employees
- Supervises both permanent and temporary employees in the care, landscaping, and horticulture needs of all properties owned and maintained by UTC, including several off- campus sites, this includes but is not limited to grading, planting, mulching, fertilization, mowing, pruning, greenhouse operation, walkway and street cleaning, snow removal, litter removal, removal of fallen trees and limbs that prevent travel, and repairing open hole and walking safety hazards
- Conducts comprehensive inspections to ensure that work performed by personnel meets quality and productivity goals
- Manages and maintains irrigation systems throughout the campus
- Remains on-call 24/7/365 for campus grounds and motor pool emergencies, including weather events
- Procures the services of various contractors for performing department-related work, including taking telephone bids, evaluating bids, proceeding with contract work while ensuring compliance within department budget, contractors include those which provide services to off- campus UTC properties
- Serves as a member of the Campus Landscape Committee
- Provides input to program development, design reviews, and construction coordination for capital projects on campus, as direct feedback to the UT System level of campus landscape issues
- Performs design reviews and assists in the development of UTC design standards for landscape construction and development
- Determines material and equipment requirements for the department, including landscaping projects, special requests, etc. and assures that material is available prior to beginning work
- Evaluates tools/equipment required to complete work, ensuring that they are properly maintained and accounted for; also makes recommendations for acquiring necessary tools and small and heavy equipment
- Provides supervision of the day-to-day operation of the UTC Motor Pool
- Provides supervision of the UTC Motor Pool mechanic
- Ensures compliance with state laws regarding certain operational aspects of the Motor Pool such as overseeing and maintaining compliance with underground storage tank regulations in compliance with state and federal law; compiling monthly mileage reports for all Motor Pool vehicles; scheduling and monitoring all maintenance work on Pool vehicles; monitoring and approving all Motor Pool material purchases for budget compliance; ensuring that repairs on vehicles are completed properly and in a timely manner includes getting estimates on vehicle operation or body repairs when required
- Utilizes available Grounds crew to fill gaps in operation of the Motor Pool, ensuring that customers are always served
- Supervises care and maintenance of specialized turf for athletic fields, including seeding, mowing, fertilization, and other turf treatment tasks
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Diversified knowledge of grounds and athletic field care
- Knowledge in horticultural techniques such as planting, pruning, plant cultivation, and fertilization
- Knowledge of Motor Pool operations including vehicle maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements associated with grounds care and motor pool operations
- Knowledge of the layout, installation, operation, and maintenance of irrigation systems
- Must be familiar with the operation and maintenance of required tools, including mowers, backhoe, grass trimmers, pruners, chain saws, and edgers
- Supervisory experience and skills are required
- Ability to communicate effectively is required, both in writing and orally
- Must be able to obtain a Category 3 pest management certification

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a high school diploma and five years' experience in facilities or maintenance management, with at least two years of supervisory experience; and diversified knowledge of grounds and athletic field care, including horticultural techniques such as planting, pruning, plant cultivation, and fertilization; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications: An associate's degree, vocational, or technical training; current Category 3 pest management certification; experience with Rain Bird IQ4 system; experience in higher education or other institutional facilities organization; direct management responsibility for a major component of a facilities management organization; knowledge of municipal codes and safety; experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, and Motor Pool operation; and membership/participation in industry organizations is preferred.
