Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Utility Locator for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O).
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Works independently as Utility Locator for Rutgers Utilities Department reporting directly to Utilities Project Manager.
This position is meant to help Rutgers Utilities fulfill its responsibility as underground facility operator as dictated by New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU).
The person selected for this position is responsible for keeping Rutgers Utilities Department compliant with BPU rules as they pertain to locating and marking out underground utilities, as well as placing markout requests prior to Utilities performing any underground excavation work.
The selected Utility Locator is also required to assist the Survey/GIS crew in updating and correcting Rutgers utility maps.
If required, the selected Utility Locator may guide and instruct markout trainees as well as perform any duties of the group.
The selected Utility Locator will also perform preventive maintenance inspection of the Rutgers-owned gas distribution system.
Assists Rutgers staff, mechanics, Survey/GIS crew, and contractors to identify, locate, and markout the underground utilities within the Rutgers properties.
Responsible to call in markout requests for Rutgers excavation work.
Responsible for reviewing all the markout requests that comes in via email and fax machine, and performing said markout requests as needed.
Performs special project/investigation work that includes utility locating work.
Responds to emergency markouts (nights, weekends, holiday, etc.) as needed.
Reaches out to contractors/other utility owners or markout technicians as needed to understand proposed work within Rutgers.
Performs routine preventive maintenance inspection of the Rutgers-owned gas distribution lines.
Performs related duties as required.
Conducts inventory of markout materials and supplies; and advise management when to reorder stock.
Detects faulty operation of locating equipment; and reports questionable conditions to supervisor.
Provides guidance and instruction to markout trainees.
Assists Rutgers Survey/GIS crew in updating the Rutgers Utilities Maps.
Investigates and field verifies existing utility systems and how they are shown in the utility maps.
Reviews existing utility maps and produces sketches showing corrections as needed.
Responsible for reviewing and keeping up to date with the requirements of NJ One Cal.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent, plus 4 years working experience in utilities, facilities, construction, or surveying.
